How did you get into photography? How did you learn your way around a camera?
Honestly I became interested in photography around 2013 when I started snapping photos with my iPhone. I got good with composition and shared images of my travels, favorite spots to frequent, nature, architecture, old homes, coffee? Hahaha, you know "aesthetically pleasing" stuff! But if I really think hard on it, I've always had such an interest in visuals that stems back from childhood. I have a very heavy painting background which I believe initially sparked my interest and respect for art in general. I don't paint so much now since I'm so busy with photography, but I believe it plays a huge role in the success of my business. I taught myself how to use a camera when my, then boyfriend now husband, bought me a Canon Rebel T3i for my birthday. After using it for awhile, I decided it was time for an upgrade. I then spent many hours on youtube haha, and of coarse just out shooting to learn my way around a more advanced camera. I'm super thankful to my family and friends in Denton TX, that offered to model for me during that time <3
What made you decide to specialize in wedding photography? Do you do any other photography?
When I first started it was all for fun! Just a hobby really. Then by word of mouth my business just kind of started. I did everything from kids birthday parties, baby announcements, events, boudoir, portraits, marketing, you name it. After some time past it just kind of hit me that I had a love and a knack for working with couples. Something about the more they were distracted by each other and the less they were focused on me, the better I performed and the better my images came out. I keep this mindset even now by giving my couples prompts and allowing them to take moments during our sessions. My husband sometimes tags along during my shoots, and he always says there's a major turning point in each shoot. Where the couple gets lost in each other and they no longer feel the camera so heavy on them. It's just them, and it's so so beautiful to witness. <3
What do you feel sets you apart from other photographers?
I think I have a real talent in connecting with people and making them feel comfortable. I love to learn about my couples, knowing them and their story helps me curate their images to something that fits their mold, whether it's just a small session or their full blown wedding day.
What are three words you would use to describe your ideal client?
Free-spirited, risk it for the biscuit types hahaha, and passionate. I feel like I'm lucky in that most of my clients are like minded in that they don't mind jumping a fence to get "the shot" and easily laugh off any clumsy or awkward moments.I love them for that.
What is your favorite moment to capture on the wedding day?
I'm gonna be predicable here and say the Bride and Groom Formals. I love getting the bride and groom alone after they say "I do" for some shots of their utter excitement that they just committed to one another for forever. It gives me all the feels!
Favorite wedding to date?
There are so many that I love and cherish, but I'm going to have to choose the Martin Wedding out in West Texas.
What is your favorite theme/color palette to work with, or one you wish you saw more?
Oooooo, good question! If you can't already tell, I'm in love with anything "desert vibes" warm tones, pampas grass, minimal white dress *drool* And I honestly just find it so refreshing when I come across a couple that has a truly unique style and they incorporate that into their wedding day. I would love to see more couples incorporate things that are unique to them in their weddings instead of just doing what's trending on Pinterest or Green Wedding Shoes. b e y o u.
Biggest wedding day challenge you have had to face?
Lucky for me, there hasn't been too many major wedding day obstacles. But I will say that in the past I've had coordinators not give me enough time to capture everything that's on the timeline, and that ends up being a little stressful on me. I like to keep in communication with the couple during the planning process regarding their timeline, or the coordinators, so that we are all on the same page come day of. Also, it gets really frustrating when a family member or someone in the bridal party acts as a distraction to the bride and groom and keeps them from being happy or really soaking in all the sweet moments.
3 Crucial tips you would love to share for future clients?
Your wedding, your way! Stay present, and keep it simple!
What are some things you wish fellow planners/coordinators knew or did to make your job easier? Either on the wedding day, before, or after?
Keep in open communication about the timeline! I love when planners allow me like 30-45mins around sunset with the couple for the bride and groom formals. Also love being credited on social media, and when I'm allowed to eat as the bride and groom are eating at the wedding, so that I'm ready as the next event comes up! <3
