Hey Friend! I am so thrilled to share our Vanitas inspired recreation! For those who love symbolism or art, (or let’s be serious, Halloween) this one is for you!! Not sure what Vanitas artwork references? Here’s a snippet from good ‘ole Wikipedia:

“ A vanitas is a symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death, often contrasting symbols of wealth and symbols of ephemerality and death.”

We took the main concepts of Vanitas with death and ephemerality and curated one hell of a design! So before we dive into the design, meet the ones behind the amazing vision!

The Creative Team:

Our model, Whitney, was adorned in a split design, with a “death” skull side, and her floral “ephemeral” side.

We chose a brand spankin’ new venue (read still under construction until Spring 2020) called The Weinberg at Wixon Valley as our home base. While the main venue is still being built, their vineyard is gorgeous! The Weinberg is an expansive venue that will soon be producing its own wine outside of College Station, Texas.

Naturally Flawless did a fabulous job creating the intricate artwork on our model, and opted to do more of a natural look with bone vs. the traditional black and white skull makeup.
Urban Rubbish crafted custom floral they had sewn onto the bralette and skirt, along with floral “tattoos” and head-piece.

We created a simple vignette utilizing items commonly found in Vanitas artwork, such as sand timers, candlesticks, skulls, vintage books + incorporating custom details like the bull skull and smoke bombs.

The bull skull with the green smoke bomb pouring out of the orifices in the skull amidst the budding grape vines is my favorite scene.

We finished the day with an epic sparkler tower scene of our model holding a decorated skull and essentially “holding it to the fire”...don’t worry, they aren’t hot.

The team at Thomas Ross Photography captured the photos and video beautifully! So whether you love art and symbolism, or straight up halloween, we hope you love this stellar creative teams vision as much as we did dreaming it up!
